Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) was founded in 1867 as a teacher training institution and has been at its current location in Northern Chicago since 1961. NEIU’s student population of over 12,000 is recognized as the most diverse of any university in the Midwest. NEIU is a partner institution of the University Center of Lake County and maintains remote outreach centers for inner city studies, Latino student outreach and for the Chicago Public Schools. Blackboard was first established at NEIU in 2001 with about 200 courses. For several years, creation of user accounts, creation of Bb courses and enrollments of students into Bb courses was done manually in the Blackboard Learning System Basic Edition. We upgraded from Blackboard Basic Edition to Learning System Enterprise Edition 6.3 in early 2006, to Enterprise Version 7.1 in fall, 2006 and 7.3 in early 2008. NEIU is a Blackboard ASP client and does not use the Blackboard Content System or Community System.

In 2006, NEIU began a three-year project to integrate all campus administrative systems and Blackboard into a university-wide ERP system called NEIUworks (built on the SunGard Banner platform) and a portal called NEIUport (built on the SunGard Luminis platform). Integration of Blackboard into the portal, identity management, and student information systems began in January, 2007. This allows for single username and password access to Blackboard and most online resources at the University, automatic generation of new Bb course shells (approximately 2,000 per semester) and enrollment (and un-enrollment) of students and instructors into Bb courses. It is estimated that over one-half of NEIU faculty and over one-third of all course sections currently use Blackboard.

Current projects include developing courses for hybrid and fully online delivery, creating online tutorials for Blackboard features, creating instructional modules for use in Blackboard courses and developing training in online teaching strategies. Paul and Tony provide mentorship in the integration of technology into learning and instruction, technology training, instructional design for online instruction and the development and administration of Blackboard at NEIU. They also teach courses in the Departments of Educational Leadership and Development and Teacher Education at NEIU.
